FIRST LINES

(Best viewed on a computer, tablet or laptop. Smart phones misalign the elements, though rotating to landscape mode can help a bit.)

THIS is a chart of our direct ancestors uncovered to date. Clicking on a linked name should bring up the family tree for that surname, with the focused person at the top of the screen. Hovering over a line of text should reveal brief source information. As with all charts, I've left out details of anyone born within the last hundred years, well aware that there are times when that century feels too short. It isn't altogether comfortable publishing bald details of much-loved grandparents. And even Herbert Reginald Hayes, the great-grandfather who died when I was tiny, for whom children were better neither seen nor heard, was enough of a presence to make me think twice about including his vital statistics. The linen he left behind was embroidered "H.R.H. Annett". We thought he was Royal.

"ONE NIGHT,
in the highlands of Vietnam,
I was sleeping in the hut
in my hermitage. I dreamed
of my mother. I saw myself
sitting with her, and we
were having a wonderful
talk... It was so pleasant
to sit there and talk
to her as if she had never
died. When I woke up...
I opened the door
and went outside...
Walking slowly in the
moonlight through the rows
of tea plants... each
time my feet touched
the earth I knew my mother
was there with me. I knew
this body was not mine
alone but a living
continuation of my mother
and father and my
grandparents and great-
grandparents. Of all
my ancestors. These feet
that I saw as 'my' feet were
actually 'our' feet. Together
my mother and I were leaving
footprints in the damp
soil..."
